“Let us here dedicate few words to the young conductor, José Antonio Montaño, who nonetheless enjoys an enviable curriculum. His conducting is of the highest standars and dismisses the unnecessary redundancies some compositions might inspire. Especially significant is the precision of the orchestra as a whole, hard to attain when the music performed requires eight percussionists that should act unisonous. You would need a sublime orchestra and an, otherwise, mistakes would be inevitable. Mission accomplished and deserving of unquestionable merit.

I confirm what I have said at the beginning of this article, a concert that is with no doubt above the average and a great loss for those could not enjoy it.

Muchos aplausos y bravos.”

“La Madrileña, a period instrument orchestra, performed a concert in the Real Academy of Bellas Artes of Madrid. The result was a full house and a spectacular success. The orchestra conductor José Antonio Montaño has embarked on a meritorious adventure given the current circumstances: creating a new orchestra whose home is Madrid. If performance sets the criteria, then a brilliant future is awaiting this orchestra. Montaño directed all with expressive and efficient control, gaining his orchestra its deserved applause.”

QUEL MATRIMONIO SEGRETO E RIUSCITO.

“We want to say something about the conductor of the Madrid orchestra, who is successfully specializing in the repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries, as could be seen by what he achieved as he conducted the Orchestra Regionale Filarmonia Veneta in Ferrara. It was an excellent performance characterized by a transparency of the sound, a gradation of dynamics, and interplay with the voices. This is a director capable of achieving the nuances and timbres appropriate of both baroque and romantic styles from a group using 19th-century orchestral instruments. The resulting smoothness, together with a range of colors, is a joy to the ears and a lift for the spirit. Montaño knows how to get results and never, even for a second, abandons the voices, having instilled in the orchestra a respect for the perfect balance between the pit and the stage.”.

“Great success for Il matrimonio segreto: excellent actors and an impeccable orchestra. The applause heard on Thursday evening in our Teatro Comunale di Ferrar was perhaps the most sincere and spirited of the lyric season. Impeccable, with no unnecessary frills or showing off by the Orchestra Filharmonia Veneta directed by José Antonio Montaño.”.

THE FOOTWORK THAT FORESHADOWS REVENGE

A resounding success for Medea, the first work of the Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico de Mérida.

“The music accompanying the work, perfectly in step with the dancers, deserves special mention. The conductor knew how create excitement, and even with one’s eyes closed, it was possible to imagine Medea plotting her revenge. An opportunity in which José Antonio Montaño showed once again his worth as a conductor, and in which the Orchestra of Extremadura was able to shine”.

“The emotion stirred in the last few minutes of the work provoked an ovation that went on literally for minutes. The nearly two thousand people in attendance stood and bathed the more than thirty dancers and the orchestra in cheers and praise”.

“A hugely successful first work of this new edition of the classic theatre festival. A triumph that really raises the bar. And without a doubt, a date that will long remain in the memory of those in attendance”.

‘MEDEA’  IN A FLAMENCO RYTHM OPENS THE FESTIVAL DE MERIDA

“The work of the Ballet Nacional de España and of the Orquesta de Extremadura, thanks to conductor José Antonio Montaño, is simply extraordinary”.

“In the end the breathtaking music created an atmosphere that will not soon be forgotten in the bleachers of the Teatro Romano de Mérida. And that is no small thing”.

THE FESTIVAL OPENS WITH SEVEN NONSTOP MINUTES OF APPLAUSE FOR THE MEDEA OF EL BALLET NACIONAL

“The Orquesta de Extremadura was well showcased. They demonstrated themselves to be on par with the best European orchestras, and under the calm yet intense baton of José Antonio Montaño, we in the audience were carried away by Medea’s wishes in every scene”.

MEDEA, MYTH, MUSIC AND DANCE

“The Orchestra of Extremadura, led on this occasion by José Antonio Montaño, the young conductor from Madrid at the helm of the Orquesta Escuela de la Sinfónica de Madrid, approached this flamenco version of Medea in perfect, if somewhat complicated conjunction with the Ballet Nacional de España, directed by Antonio Najarro, choreography by José Granero. This flamenco Medea, originally premiered in Madrid in 1984, was composed by Manolo Sanlúcar. The entire cast and company in this production were excellent—instrumentalists and dancers, including the extraordinary performance of Maribel Gallardo as Medea—with both musical directors demonstrating such security and solidity in such complex scores that they were able to offer , even with the barest and simplest of stage settings, a formidable show, full of strength and magnetism that were transmitted to the large audience of spectators, who in turn showed their appreciation with an intense and prolonged ovation at the end of the performance”.

THE LONG NIGHT OF MEDEA IS BACK

“And in this long night of mythology, the composition takes on great importance. The collaboration of maestro Granero and composer Manolo Sanlúcar was essential to give shape to a production in which the flamenco rhythms, the melodies, the conjunction of guitars—tonight in the hands of Enrique and Jonathan Bermúdez and Diego Losada—and the percussion of Roberto Vozmediano, feel enveloped by the Orquesta de Extremadura. Conductor José Antonio Montaño converted these elements into a total spectacle: “The music is one of its main pillars”, explains Najarro. “Few compositions for dance have been so effective”.

HARMONIES BOTH FLAMENCO AND CLASSICAL FOR MEDEA

“Antonio Najarro, in reviving the Medea of Miguel Narros and Manolo Sanlúcar, who structured the music of the work, sought to integrate the flamenco percussion of the Ballet Nacional into the original score. “It was very complicated, very complex, and a very risky move,” says the director of the Ballet. José Antonio Montaño, director of the Orquesta del Ballet Nacional, made it all possible, with the end result an even more magical Medea”.

IN THE TEATRO REAL, PERGOLESI’S LA SERVA PADRONA

“The Teatro Real production of La serva padrona united Etcétera, the company of marionettes, and soloists from the Orquesta-Escuela of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid (resident orchestra of the theatre). Soprano Eugenia Enguitaand baritone Manel Esteve were impressive: the first with a well-placed, clear and agile voice; the second, effective and very musical. The whole production, conducted with precision by José Antonio Montaño from the harpsichord, provided the sense of ease that so suits this work”.

“The musical direction of José Antonio Montano has always seemed to me, on the whole, correct and calibrated. Directed under the canopy of a completely 17th Century brightness, he walked the line between airiness and elegance of sound from the very beginning of the gracious introductory Sinfonia. Lending valuable support to the young maestro from Madrid was the playing of l’Orchestra Regionale Filarmonia Veneta: flexible, disciplined, and notable for its lightness and precision of sound”

CLAUDIO MONTEVERDI’S L’ORFEO IN THE TEATRO REAL IN MADRID

“We enjoyed a representation that was human and direct in which the performers, free of all artifice, managed to transmit by their own means all the emotion of Monteverdi’s work. The limitations of the room and the austerity of the stage allowed us to fully enjoy an excellent interpretation that was full of theatricality, and to enjoy every detail, every note, each and every tiny gesture of the musicians and singers”.

F. J. HAYDN’S OPERA, LA VERA COSTANZA IN THEGRAND THÉÂTRE MASSENET IN SAINT-ETIENNE

“The recitatives accompanied from the harpsichord and the use of baroque kettledrums in the orchestra offer splendor to this virtuosic Mozart composition. The orchestra, under the broad and flexible direction of young conductor José Antonio Montaño, elevated this work with mastery, and were vigorously applauded last night in their premiere in the great Théâtre Massenet.””

“Lastly, we must commend the leadership of young conductor José Antonio Montaño. In a non-baroque conception he brings out the refinements of the orchestration particularly well and knows how to achieve the appropriate light and rhythms. This performance by the Orchestre Symphonique de Saint Etienne stands out in a repertoire which it does not usually practice, and which it followed to perfection“

“Marked by the seal of youth, the cast—standouts of whom include mezzo Federica Carnevale (Rosina), tenor Cosimo Panozzo (Ernesto) and tenor Enea Scala (Errico)—offered a beautiful homogeneity, particularly in the ensembles. To tell the truth, the singers were coordinated, stimulated and tamed by the maestro, the also very young José Antonio Montaño. What’s more, this conductor who is as committed as he is accurate, and as motivated as he is motivating, knew how to mobilize and galvanize all the chairs of the of l’Orchestre symphonique de Saint-Étienne into great shape.””

CONCERT, EL ESCORIAL “DELICATE PIECES FOR A CELEBRATION”

Real Coliseo de Carlos III
Delicadas piezas para una celebración
María Espada, José Hernández Pastor. La Tropa Barroca de Madrid. José Antonio Montaño. 10 y 11 de diciembre

“The newly formed orchestra has been dubbed La Tropa Barroca de Madrid and it is a melting pot where acclaimed musicians come together (the concertmaster is, without further ado, Hiro Kurosaki, who is the concertmaster of William Christie’s ensemble Les Arts Florissants) with talented young musicians who aspire to a career in this increasingly complicated profession. The direction of this group has been entrusted to José Antonio Montaño, heretofore not among the ranks in the historical-performance movement, but one who knows and loves this repertoire like few others. For the group’s baptism two of the best Spanish voices, soprano María Espada and the countertenor Carlos Mena, had been made godmother and godfather. La Tropa Barroca de Madrid played finely in tune with good blend and balance and, above all, with strength. All of this augurs very well for the orchestra”

“Elastic and smooth, the Orquesta Escuela de la Sinfónica de Madrid, directed flawlessly by José Antonio Montaño. The dynamic range of the ensemble is well modulated by his baton, especially in the first Finale, where the music is articulated in a variety of episodes that are playful, intriguing, lyric and dramatic, by way of ingenious modulations and the dynamic range which wonderfully captures all the emotional changes that fit within this wide, yet very gentle framework.”

BALLET “DR. FAUST’S LABORATORY” IN THE AUDITORIO BALUARTE WITH THE ORQUESTA SINFONICA DE NAVARRA

“(…)with a stupendous orchesta and conductor in the pit, the music of Fernando Palacios is effective for the narration, first and foremost. There is a certain darkness and mystery, with deafening percussion, when the devil appears. The Seven Deadly Sins are well interpreted, with diverse rhythms and there’s no lack of fun and good humor. And it crafts a framework of sound for everything going on on stage. It is tonal and easy to listen to, yet it is open to some rich and unusual timbres. And all of this shone brilliantly thanks to an excellent job done by the Sinfónica de Navarra. I liked Montaño’s conducting because he brought out the nuances in the music and achieved a diversity of sonorities from the musicians, from the most transcendantal to the most superficial and burlesque con una estupenda orquesta y director en el foso..
