On July 31 at 12:00 p.m., conductor and researcher José Antonio Montaño will give a lecture titled “The Influence of the Classical World on Eighteenth-Century European Opera”, as part of the School of the Classical World, one of the 2025 Summer Courses offered by the Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo (UIMP). The course will take place from July 28 to August 1 at the iconic Palacio de la Magdalena in Santander.
Now in its third edition, the School of the Classical World aims to explore Greco-Roman Antiquity from a broad perspective, highlighting its ongoing relevance in various cultural and scientific fields. In this context, Montaño’s lecture will examine how the myths, values, and narrative structures of ancient Greece and Rome shaped European opera in the eighteenth century.
The course is open to anyone interested in the classical world and its influence on contemporary culture. It is especially intended for students, teachers, researchers, and all those wishing to reflect on the Greco-Roman legacy. Sessions will be held in person and will also be available via streaming.
