The conductor José Antonio Montaño joins the faculty of the Reina Sofía School of Music, one of the most prestigious institutions in the world in the field of higher music education. This new appointment reinforces a career deeply committed to teaching, the training of young musicians, and the transmission of musical knowledge from an artistic, technical, and humanistic perspective.
Throughout his career, he has maintained a constant involvement in the training of young musicians. From 2003 to 2013, he served as Music Director of the Orquesta Escuela of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid at the Teatro Real, where, in addition to his pedagogical and artistic work, he was actively involved in conducting opera, ballet, and symphonic productions. During that period, the Teatro Real also entrusted him with the musical direction of numerous opera studio projects and concerts, integrating the educational dimension into the theatre’s artistic activity.
His commitment to teaching has led him to work regularly with youth and pre-professional orchestras, such as the Accademia Orchestra of Teatro alla Scala in Milan, as well as at institutions including the Escuela Superior de Música de Alto Rendimiento (ESMAR) and various conservatories and universities, where he teaches orchestral conducting, opera performance, repertoire, and delivers lectures on music history and musicology.
He has also served as Principal Conductor of the Orchestra of the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and of the Symphony Orchestra of the Forum Musikae Higher School of Music, consolidating a pedagogical career that runs in parallel to his activity as a guest conductor with leading orchestras in Spain and internationally.
With this new appointment at the Reina Sofía School of Music, José Antonio Montaño consolidates a career in which conducting, research, and teaching form a unified commitment: the transmission and renewal of the musical heritage through excellence, artistic rigour, and the training of new generations of performers.
